SOUTH STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

As part of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority's ongoing program of Design-Build delivery in the state's urban districts, OCA Architects provided design services for the new $36.5 million South Street Elementary School in Newark.

Working as Associate Architect, OCA Architects developed both pre and post-award design, educational specifications, interiors and furniture plans, construction documents and provided construction administration for this new 103,000 s.f. facility in the heart of the city. A replacement of an original District facility, the project consists of two sites-the building site located at the intersection of Johnson and Dawson Street and a parking lot at Hermon and Pennington Street.

The new school accommodates 597 students from Pre-K to Grade 8. Program components include a full service cafeteria, multi-purpose assembly, classrooms, science labs, gymnasium, and a media center. In response to the dense urban area in which it is located, the gymnasium was located on the second floor. This project has been awarded LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
